Storytelling Introduction

For us, the Zushakon began when my husband Alkius was inspired by the idea of a wholly reincarnation-based society. He envisioned sentient souls that existed and mingled first, then forgot everything as they were born into physical bodies. Upon death, their memories returned and they discussed what they'd learned from their most recent lifetimes. Their greatest developments took place in the Underworld, where they could fully celebrate their lives and be who they truly were, but only postmortem.

Inspired by Henry Kuttner's The Dark Silent One, and drawing from the definitions of aeons and gods, the idea of a Death God was extended to the concept of a Death People. They shared a universe of reincarnation and reflection, and as a result, they developed a delightfully dark sense of gallows humor. These are the goth kids of the aeons, morbid and dark from an outsider's perspective but very thoughtful about the nature of being alive once you get to know them.
